There are quite a few senior’s living accommodation and care options available, so if you’re a little confused as to what’s what, you’re not alone. We’ve broken it down to help give you the information you need to decide which option may be right for you.

What is a retirement village? This is a community offering a range of accommodation types with services and facilities, where most residents are over 55 and generally retired from full-time work. This is an option for those who are independent and may be looking to downsize their home and be part of community where everyone is at a similar life stage. Retirement Villages have independent living accommodation which could be in the form of a unit, villa or apartment – whatever suits you and your lifestyle. Additionally, there can be communal spaces such Community Centres, cafes and hairdressing salons onsite. Life Care has retirement living options around Adelaide. Learn more here.

What is assisted living? Assisted living is a purpose-built community for senior people who require additional support services that are included in the fees. These services can include daily cooking of meals, regular apartment cleaning, heavy laundry, garden maintenance if required, and general maintenance of your suite. These services are tailored to the person’s needs and are delivered in the residents own private, secure suite with independence and dignity. Gaynes Park Suites is South Australia’s first assisted living community. Learn more here.

What is residential aged care? This is for those who can no longer live at home independently. Reasons can include illness, disability, loss of a partner or carer, or an emergency. All of their clinical and personal needs are taken care of including their care, accommodation, cleaning and meals. Lifestyle programs are also part of the offering, so residents are physically and mentally stimulated.

Aged care homes are usually single or shared rooms with private ensuites, and communal lounge, dining and other recreational spaces. Life Care has residential aged care homes around Adelaide, to learn more about them, click here.
